All About Chakras

Happy June!!! Woah, I can't believe it's already June and we're getting into the summer months! Seasonal changes impact our health and wellbeing in more ways than we even notice, so it's important to have a self 'check in' every so often to see where your mind and body is at before weather changes take a toll on your body and mind!!

That's where chakras come in to play! I loooooove all things chakras. Before I get into what they are and how you can balance them, let's just chat about why I pay attention to these chakras. As a way to help with healing physical and internal ailments, I've looked a lot into more spiritual/Ayurvedic/Eastern medicine and healing modalities, like the energy system running through the chakras of our bodies. Chakras exist in our sub bodies, and are part of the Kundalini system which is a form of spiritual yoga that focuses on breath, focus and channeling energy throughout the body.

Chakras are energy wheels in our subtle body that vibe with the energy and vibrations that flows through our bodies, affecting our emotional and physical bodies tremendously. The chakras are either balanced, overactive or under active. Balancing our chakras is a principle of Ayurvedic healing and our yogic practice that can boost our energy and synergistically bring our lives into balance.

There are 7 chakras, each are associated with different aspects of our life, different systems of our physical body, different colors, and even differ based on whether your male or female. Chakras provide insight into our deeper selves and our energy systems. When we balance them, they can bring our lives to a deeper and higher level of consciousness and self awareness. Here’s a brief outline to the 7 chakras and some tips and tricks on how to balance them.

The No Grainer -- crystal healing for balancing the chakras

Root Chakra: The first chakra is the root chakra, associated with the color red, and is located at the base of the spine. This chakra is important for feelings of grounding, security, stability and safety. If it is unbalanced, you may feel unsafe in your body, home, financial state or even identity. To balance using crystals, incorporate red jasper, smoky quartz, onyx and other red or black crystals into your meditation along with all sorts of red foods like red peppers, rhubarb, tomatoes, strawberries, and other grounding root vegetables. Yoga poses to include are tree pose, warrior II, mountain pose, easy seated pose, and child’s pose.

The No Grainer -- balancing the heart chakra

Sacral Chakra: The second chakra is located in the lower abdomen and governed by the frequencies of the orange color. It is different for men and women--  for men it is more physically connected to the body and for women it is more emotionally connected. When it is balanced, our sacral power is manifested through expression of sexuality, creativity, passion and personal power and fertility for women. When unbalanced, we can experience tension in our hips and lower back as well as emotional anxiety and blocks. To stimulate a balance, use amber, carnelian, orange calcite in chakra balancing meditation (lay these crystals over your abdomen area just under your belly-button) and yoga poses such as half pigeon, plow pose, frog pose and goddess pose. Supplement this chakra with tons of orange and root vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes for enhanced reproductive health, grounding and balance!

Solar Plexus Chakra: The last of the physical, grounding chakras is the Solar Plexus chakra, or the third chakra. This chakra is located right behind the belly button and is associated with yellow color, yellow foods and crystals. When your solar plexus chakra is balanced, you will feel confidence, courage, bravery. Physically it governs your digestion and symptoms of indigestion, bloating, constipation or other discomfort could indicate an imbalanced solar plexus chakra. It’s balance is amplified by crystals such as citrine, yellow jasper and foods such as yellow bell peppers, lemons, yellow squashes, mangoes and pineapple. Yoga poses to stimulate the solar plexus chakra include ones that focus on your center core and energy such as sun salutations, boat pose, wheel pose, bow pose, and tree pose.

Heart Chakra: Also known as the 4th chakra, this one is located in the center of the chest and associated with green and pink colors for foods and crystals. Using these crystals, foods and colors to balance the heart chakra will allow us to connect to our heart, feel more love and compassion for ourselves and our surroundings, and the ability to feel vulnerable comfortably. Crystals to place on your heart space during meditation include aventurine, rose quartz (personal fave!), green calcite. Do all the backbends to open your heart space, such as standing back bend, camel pose, or wheel pose. and eat al the green and pink foods like all sorts of leafy greens and pink colored berries!

Throat Chakra: This one is, unsurprisingly, located at the throat. It is the 5th chakra and is associated with the blue foods and crystals such as angelite, sodalite, blue apatite and aquamarine! Place these on the throat during a chakra aligning meditation and feel your voice come alive! Eat tons of blueberries, blue algae, blackberries to also open up your throat space. The throat chakra, when in balance, promotes communication with our true self, confidence and honesty in communication and self expression. When the throat chakra is under active, we may be speaking at a level that is disconnected from our truth, or may be holding back from expressing ourselves. Do some yoga poses that stimulate the thyroid gland in the throat region such as plow pose, camel pose, and shoulder stand.

Third Eye Chakra: the 6th chakra is located at your third eye, the spot right between your eyebrows. The third eye is connected with indigo, and using crystals of this color will help open up or balance your third eye chakra. The third eye is associated with vision, intuition, self guidance and self realization. It helps you to see yourself, your life and your path with clarity and allows you to lead your life with intuition. Eating indigo colored foods such as blackberries and purple foods (like for the 7th chakra) can help to open up the third eye chakra. Yoga poses to balance it include: half tortoise pose, rabbit pose, child’s pose.

Crown Chakra: This is 7th chakra, the one that connects you to your highest self and the universe. It is connected with white and violet, so use powerful crystals such as clear quartz or amethyst during meditations to open this chakra! This allows for stable energy distribution throughout the entire body, a greater consciousness, and connection to your higher self and the universe. Don't hold back with the purple colored foods to absorb those energies and frequencies, organically such as eggplants, blackberries, and purple cabbage. Meditation is a surefire way to activate the crown chakra and your higher conciseness, but you can also do certain yoga poses such as head stands and savasana!

Chakras are important in your spirituality practice, connecting to your higher self and tapping into the power of the universe. There’s so much to learn about these energy centers and how they affect our emotional and physical worlds. When practicing yoga asana and meditation, focus on the energy and feelings that you feel with these centers of the body to help identify imbalances. Connecting to our body in a physical and sub-physical manner can help us be more in tune with how we feel and what our bodies are trying to tell us, leading us to better intuition in how to treat our bodies for optimal energy, self awareness and health. Try a chakra-balancing meditation by either placing the associated crystals on your chakras while doing a full body scan or doing a full body scan of how your body feels in each area without the crystals, then finding ones that suit your unbalanced chakras. Being in touch with our bodies is paramount these days, and looking to our chakras to do so is the perfect way to start, physically and emotionally!

What would you like to learn about chakras? Do you do chakra balancing meditations? I was told I have an under active throat chakra back when I was a lot less in touch with my own thoughts and words and also had thyroid imbalances! How funny. But now I feel all my chakras coming into balancing since diligently working to bring harmony to my subtle body. I've always had a very open heart chakra, so hopefully that won't change!
