How to Cultivate Inspiration in Everything You Do
I'm all about living a life with purpose. A life full of the kind of inspiration, curiosity and passion that gets you jumping out of bed everyday just to do it. How do you live an inspired life, though? Here are some of my favorite ways.
1. Limit "Wasted Time":
Okay, this is going to sound slightly critical and judgmental, but bear with me. In my opinion, if you really wanna create some inspirational vibes within and optimize your productivity, you really need to limit wasteful down time. I'm all about rest and rejuvenation, but more though yoga, self-care and vacations. Sitting on the computer binge-watching Netflix or sleeping until 12pm everyday just doesn't do it for me. It's just not how I want to personally spend my time. I'd much rather wake up early, hit my to-do list up, workout, eat good food and get stuff done! That being said, rest is of such importance these days when we can find downtime in our busy lives. Just let it be something away from technology where you can connect without self on a higher level (read: yoga). That's just the way I get inspiration flowing.
Another wasteful use of time is less concrete and harder to get rid of: worrying. I used to worry about such trivial things, like what other people were doing, what other people thought of me, what I should actually be doing, am I going to look weird doing xyz.... Truthfully, it's all a big waste of time. You'll never truly know what people think of you, and honestly, it doesn't matter. They're opinion of you is just not your business, so why waste time worrying about it, you know? Worrying in all senses of the word is just not worth your precious time. It just takes away from your inspired life by consuming your thoughts minutes on end. So, instead of Netflix, sleeping the day away and worrying endlessly...
2. Pick up an inspiring book:
Books are, as we know, super informative and valuable, but in all honesty, who has time to read these days? I find it so difficult to sit down with a book and just read without thinking of a million other things I should be doing. HOWEVER, there are so many essential reads out there for navigating through life, that we all really should find more time to read. Less Netflix, more paper. I've been drawn to books about chakras/Ayurveda/"soul searching", if you will, but also more "real-life" books like Essentialism. I'm not finished yet, but so far this book has shown how putting so much on our agendas can be so detrimental to our wellbeing and productivity. I'm all about maximizing productivity, and this book does a good job of outlining how doing only the essentials will help us truly succeed in more. Definitely powerful in a world like ours where everyone is constantly busy. Ugh, hate that word.
I'm also loving The Soul Searcher's Handbook which is a bit of a self discovery book in that it explains many ways in which you can uncover your soul through the modern age we live in. It's definitely a handbook in that it has a clear goal in mind and backs that up with examples. I like how it explains how to use yoga, meditation, crystals, psychic readings and more 'woo-woo" (as she terms it) things to find your purpose. It's a fun, engaging and humorous read that opens up many possible ways to be more spiritual and manifest what you want in life.
I am quickly finding that these books are literal inspiration in print. From finding essentialism in what we do to abundance in what we are, these books help us navigate through our digital, media and technology oriented age. Definitely inspiring, so turn off the TV and grab a book that speaks to what YOU want to manifest in your life, and get readin'.
3. Do more of what makes you insanely happy: Simple as that. Find what makes you smile, laugh, GLOW. If it's cooking, do more of it. If it's entertaining, do more of it. If you love doing yoga at a particular studio (me at CPY!) then do it more. Nothing is going to make you as inspired as doing what you love. It's truly as simple as that.
If you don't know what you love yet...try something new and explore your options. Go to said yoga class, walk around your city and explore a new museum or café you've never been to if you love culture or people watching. Reach out to someone that you think meshes with your vibe and make a new friend if you love to socialize. In a world where there's so much to do and be inspired by today, take advantage of it.
Things that make me v. happy include: Yoga at CPY (missing it!!!), cooking and enjoying homemade food, hanging out with my close friends, walking around and exploring new cities, reading my favorite blogs and websites, fresh brewed coffee and tasty herbal teas, unreal-smelling candles (current fave) and incense, just being cozy at home, sitting by the fireplace with the fam, being lucky enough to vacation to various beautiful places, and waking up early to have the full day ahead of me to live my life with intention and purpose. What makes you happy?
4. Find someone who you admire and resonate with to be your role model: This one is fun. Do you have a favorite blogger or Instagram account that you've been following forever? Why are you continuing to follow them? Do they live a life you wish to emulate? Do they offer quality advice? Find someone who's message and lifestyle you really resonate with and vibe with, regardless of how big a following they have or don't have. Find someone who you can see as a role model because of all that they incorporate into their life, not just their appearance on Instagram or social media. Go deeper than that and find someone who shares the same goals as you or inspires you to change your lifestyle for the better. A role model shouldn't be someone you want to copy to the T, but should be someone you could see yourself being best friends with, but also someone you can learn from. The blogging community is chock full of inspirational humans; some of my favorites are The Balanced Blonde (lifestyle GOALS, you know) and so many other wellness experts, creative entrepreneurs and lifestyle creators that inspire their audiences with reasons to live lives they're worthy of. It doesn't have to be a blogger or social media influencer, it could be anyone you know personally. Find that person whose posts you can't get enough of or who always speaks to you through their voice and content. Someone who inspires you to change. Cause we all deserve to live the best version of ourself. And hey, maybe you'll cultivate an awesome friendship with said person someday.
5. Start viewing your life as a gift and it will start to seem like one: This one is key to cultivating that ultimate lifestyle I always refer to. You have to view your life as the amazing, unreal gift that it is. We can dwell on the negative, such as that job we hate, our imperfect selves, limited time, annoying coworkers or family members, insufficient finances... all that jazz. Instead, focus on the things you are lucky enough to have in our life. It could be as elaborate as that month long trip you took climbing the mountains in South America, or it could be as simple as mobility. Be grateful for whatever it is that you've done and know that most people don't have the same opportunity. Your life is truly a gift, concretely and figuratively. When you keep a positive and grateful attitude, everything in your life feels just a whole lot better. When you think good thoughts, good things will come. And nothing keeps me inspired then going to bed every night knowing I am "ridiculously fortunate" (in the words of RHM), to have the life that I do.
Jot down all the things that make you feel inspired in a special little notebook, like my blue one shown above. That way, when you're feeling like nothing is going your way or you can't harness any creativity within you or feeling like you're just going through the motions without any purpose or intention, you'll have list of all the things you love and inspire you to remind you of your intention. I love my "Exciting Thoughts & Happening Ideas" notebook full of quotes, snippets from helpful articles, new information and so much more. It's always there when I need inspiration or reminder of all my goals!
What makes you feel inspired? How do you get yourself out of a rut? Do you live your life with purpose? Fill me in!
