The Best Fat Balls {paleo, keto, low-carb, sugar-fee}

The Best Fat Balls {paleo, keto, low-carb, sugar-fee}

Now before you freak out about the title... know that when I say 'fat balls' I don't just mean they're full of fat. I mean that yes, they are full of fat, but I also mean that they're fat burning

Yup, fat burns fat, kids! You'll hear that a lot through 2017, and for good reason.

Struggling to get more fat in your diet? Well, here's the key. In order for your body to burn the fat that you feed it (and the fat on your body) you have to lower your carb intake, so that your body switches from glucose to fat as its main source of fuel. It's called going amor sugar-burning to fat-boring -- and only about 1% of us are truly fat burning! And once you are the benefits are amazing-- crazy amounts of energy, low hunger levels, no "hanger", and ya fat burn. ;) More on that here .

So the perfect way to do that is to replace your carb treats with these guys instead. That way, you can still treat yourself (because they're so good) without taking in carbs and sugar (even natural sugars) that are going to cause a blood sugar spike, cortisol spike and fat storage -- all leaving you hungry because your body isn't that efficient at burning carbs for energy (it uses all it has really quickly, leaving you hungry for more even after a big serving of carbs). We'll save all that for another day but for now, know that the more fat you eat, and the less carbs you eat (even the good kinds...), the better your body will be at burning the energy in the food you feed it and the fat already on your body, without storing it and making you 'fat'. So yeah, fat doesn't make you fat. It makes you energetic and full of vitality because its constantly burning energy once you become fat adapted.

So next time you're craving any carb or sugar (fruit included), have one of these instead. They're satiating and once you cut out sugar for good in your diet, you'll notice they taste a lot sweeter!

Here's how you make them:

keto balls

What You'll Need:

  • 1/2 c. almonds (roasted is fine)
  • 1/2 c. walnuts
  • 1 c. dried shredded unsweetened coconut
  • 2 scoops (about 1/4 c.) Collagen peptides (I like Further Food "NOGRAINER10" at checkout or Vital Proteins)
  • 1/3 c. melted coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp. raw cacao nibs
  • 1/4 c. hemp hearts
  • 1/4 c. almond butter
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon

What To do:

1. Place all ingredients, except the cacao nibs, into a food processor and blend until the nuts are all ground up. It will likely resemble a runny nut butter -- that's ok!

2. Add the cacao nibs and process for a couple more seconds.

3. Place the mixture into a bowl and refrigerate for 30 minutes or so to let the coconut oil harden up a bit so you can form balls.

4. Once the mixture is a bit harder, take a spoon and roll a spoonful of the mixture into bite sized balls. Place on a cookie sheet and put in the freezer so they re set (they'll warm up a bit in your hands from rolling).

5. Keep the balls in a glass container in the freezer! They'll last longer than they'll stay in there  :)

These are super easy to whip together in the food processor, and if the mixture comes out a bit runnier than you expect -- that's totally cool. It's probably just the coconut oil which actually binds it all together when you roll them into balls and makes them super fat burning!!

Hope you enjoy these! Have you thought about upping your fats at all in exchange for carbs? Let me know!
