Supercharged Collagen Chocolate {sugar free, dairy free, gut-healing, keto, paleo, low carb}

Okay, I’m sure you’ve noticed. But lately I’ve been loving collagen. I know I know, it’s almost like mainstream by now. I don’t care — it works for me and I love it.

Following a recent incident of setting my hair on fire and losing a chunk of my luscious locks, I’ve decided to up the collagen in my diet even more... I’m not looking to be half-bald forever, that’s for sure.

Wait, what does collagen do for you hair? Well, collagen peptides are complete amino acids that make up the building blocks of our hair, skin, nails, joints and connective tissue. When we age, even after just 20 years old, our bodies start producing less and less collagen. This means the collagen in our hair, skin, nails, and connective tissues starts to break down and isn’t properly regenerated. Cue wrinkles, brittle hair and nails and creaking joints.

Since I’m not looking for that at age 19, I’ve decided to implement collagen into my lifestyle now. This will ensure that my body has enough collagen to keep producing those tissues and keep my hair growing, because I sure need that right about now.

Another huge aspect of collagen that I’m loving is that it helps heal a leaky gut. As you may know, I’ve been dealing with a leaky gut for who knows how long now, but since I’m in the repair stages (yay!), I need all the help I can get. Collagen helps seal the tiny holes in our intestines that occur in leaky gut syndrome due to the healing proteins. I love this property of collagen and have felt huge improvements in my digestive health since eliminating my leaky-gut stressors and supplementing the damage with collagen peptides.

One of my favorite collagen brands is Further Food. Their product is 100% natural, grass fed and pasture raised which is super important to me when sourcing my animal products! It's super affordable and will work wonders in your body. For 10% off your collagen order enter "NOGRAINER10" at checkout and let me know how you decide to incorporate collagen into your day!

Typically I use my collagen in my delicious morning adaptogenic, frothy drinks as a substitute for the bulletproof coffee I can’t really enjoy anymore seeing as I am on an adrenal healing protocol. The collagen in the drink adds a nice dose ofcomplete (full amino acid profile) protein and tons of nutrients, so I feel good about what I put in my body first thing in the morning.

But, I decided I want to feel good about what I put into my body last thing at night, too. Since I’ve got a sweet tooth, and a dark, dark, dark chocolate obsession I thought I needed to app the ante on my nightly chocolate square (or five). I decided to make collagen chocolate with my favorite collagen, Further Food collagen. That way, I could enjoy my tasty (sugar-free!) chocolate before bed while giving my body those nutrients and proteins it needs to restore itself while I sleep!

Here’s the recipe for my sugar-free, keto-friendly, fat-burning, gut-healing chocolate. It’s got a slightly gritty texture from the collagen which I happen to LOVE. It’s like you can taste how natural, simple and whole the chocolate is. It’s also barely sweetened, only with a touch of Yacon syrup, and trust me, you’ll realize how little sweetener you really need in chocolate when you’re making it yourself!! Plus, there’s so many more nutrient-dense things you can add instead, like all the healthy fats. More bang for your nutrition buck!

What You'll Need:

1/4 c. raw cacao powder

1/4 c. coconut oil (can sub for ghee or even cacao butter!)

1 tbsp. bulletproof brain octane oil

2 scoops Further Food Collagen peptides

1 tsp. vanilla extract (alcohol, sugar and gluten free)

1 tsp. cinnamon

pinch of himalayan pink salt (or any sea salt)

toppings: raw cacao nibs, hemp hearts, dried coconut shreds, anything you're into.

What You Do:

1. Melt the coconut oil in a small sauce pan over medium heat.

2. Once dissolved, take off heat and add the rest of the ingredients

3. Stir with a spoon until incorporated and until it thickens slightly

4. Line a baking sheet or glass baking dish with aluminum foil and pour the mixture over the tin foil

5. Spread the chocolate over the tin foil slightly and sprinkle on your toppings of choice!

6. Place the tray in the freezer for 5-10 minutes, or until the chocolate is set.

7. Take out from the freezer and break the chocolate into bite-size pieces of 'bark'

8. Enjoy and store in the freezer!

While I usually just buy my yummy 90% dark chocolate at the store, this is a really special treat when I feel like having a sweet tooth but keeping it super super clean. The collagen is a great addition for gut-healing benefits as well as a nice, gritty texture. Definitely recommend you get some collagen and this brand is the best! Use NOGRAINER10 at checkout for 10% off your order!!! Woohoo!!!

Look forward to more collagen recipes! Hint: bulletproof coffee and adaptogenic tonics?!

Happy weekend friends!
